SD Myers Training & Education offers the world's most comprehensive formal education program designed to develop and equip transformer experts. This is a world class, blended learning experience, offering fundamental and advanced technical training to all individuals involved in the life of the transformer such as planning, purchasing, transporting, installing, servicing, maintaining, managing, and insuring.
The overall program will consist of three certification program courses:
- Transformer Specialist I (TS1)
- Transformer Specialist II (TS2)
- Master Transformer Specialist (MTS)
Each certification program course builds on the previous, and is a prerequisite for the next. Each course consists of five classes in a systematic educational format. The educational approach is a blended learning format which, in general, includes one week of formal training at our learning facility in Tallmadge, Ohio, followed by practical, independent offsite learning via an internet-based format through our virtual Transformer Education Center online classroom – www.transformereducation.com. The program provides exceptional value in the form of immediate and practical impact to both the company and the individual, and provides each student with the knowledge and tools to achieve maximum return on their transformer investment.
The Transformer Specialist I (TS1) Certification is designed to provide a complete foundational understanding of the internal and external elements of the transformer and the critical fundamentals of transformer operation and maintenance. This series of classes covers the electrical, mechanical and chemical components of the transformer, the purpose and operating characteristics of these components, and the fundamental requirements and methods for maintenance. Graduates of TS1 will walk out with foundational knowledge and tools, and how to apply them to the needs and support of the maintenance of the transformer.
TS1 includes out of class, pre-course work for the Electrical Fundamentals class (including a test-out option), five days of classroom training, followed by practical work sessions and projects outside of the classroom. These activities are facilitated by the instructor through our internet-based, collaborative training and education center. The total elapsed for time for TS1 is approximately three months.
TS1 consists of the following five classes:
- Electrical Fundamentals
- Transformer Fundamentals
- Dielectric Fluid Testing and Analysis I
- Electrical Testing I
- Transformer Maintenance I
TS1 Continuing Education Credits:
4.1 CEUs | 40 PDHs / CPDs | 40 NETA CTDs
The Transformer Specialist II (TS2) Certification builds on the fundamental components learned in TS1 and takes the student to the next level of expertise. This series of classes provides the knowledge and develops the skills necessary to identify and interpret test results, perform transformer condition assessments, manage service specifications, qualify service providers and make critical maintenance decisions or recommendations based on analysis and interpretation of chemical and electrical test results and history. TS2 will also provide an understanding of overall substation design and walk the student through specific applications. This program provides an overview of the power, distribution and detail regarding the application, purchase and maintenance for Pad mount and Dry-type transformers. Graduates of TS2 will be leaders in the predictive, preventative and reactive maintenance management of transformers, possessing the knowledge and tools necessary to assess the condition of a transformer and develop a cost-effective maintenance plan to prolong the reliable life of the transformer, or to plan for its replacement.
TS2 includes five days of classroom training, followed by practical work sessions and projects outside of the classroom. These activities are facilitated by the instructor through our internet-based, collaborative learning center classrooms. The total elapsed time is approximately four months.
TS2 consists of the following five classes:
- Substation Fundamentals
- Dielectric Fluid Testing and Analysis II
- Electrical Testing II
- Transformer Maintenance II
- Pad mount and Dry-Type Transformer Basics and Maintenance
TS2 Continuing Education Credits:
4.1 CEUs | 40 PDHs / CPDs | 40 NETA CTDs
The Master Transformer Specialist (MTS) Certification provides advanced education for the individual who is or will be managing the maintenance program and/or administrating the overall delivery of that program. MTS builds on TS1 and TS2, and will take the student through vital components of the Transformer lifecycle; from purchasing and observing factory testing, to overseeing the transportation and installation of the transformer, to developing maintenance standards, including Load Tap Changers and High Voltage Circuit Breakers. This knowledge and expertise is critical to making informed and timely decisions regarding all aspects of this vital asset in order to maximize the return on investment. Graduates of MTS will gain expertise in the development of specifications for purchases and repairs, factory inspections, acceptance testing, transportation and installation requirements, field or shop repair decisions, and LTC and high-voltage circuit breaker operation and maintenance.
MTS includes five days of classroom training, followed by practical work sessions and projects outside of the classroom. These activities are facilitated by the instructor through our internet-based, collaborative learning center classrooms. The total elapsed time is approximately five months.
MTS consists of the following five classes:
- Transformer Purchasing and Specifications (New or Remanufactured)
- Transportation, Assembly, Acceptance Testing and Startup
- Load Tap Changer Operating Principles and Maintenance
- Field and Shop Repair
- High Voltage Circuit Breakers and Auxiliary Equipment
MTS Continuing Education Credits:
4.1 CEUs | 40 PDHs / CPDs | 40 NETA CTDs
