Get back a quarter of your transformer’s life

In last month’s edition of Efficient Plant, SDMyers Director of Transformer Services Bob Rasor and Product Manager Kyle Johannes shared some eye-opening information about moisture in transformers. Out of 85,000+ transformers tested, nearly 10 percent showed unacceptable levels of moisture—accounting for as much as 24 percent loss of life. The numbers don’t lie. Moisture is a major enemy to your transformer. In their article, Bob and Kyle walk through practical steps for moisture testing and reduction, as well as some insight into why your current solution may not be working.

Not all sampling devices are created equal.

Valve extensions are about more than convenience. For cabinet transformers, they are a life-saving mechanism allowing safe liquid sampling on energized transformers without ever opening the cabinet door. According to the NIOSH Hierarchy of Controls, an external sampling device provides the substitution level of protection. Our solution, SampleSafe™, offers durability-related features such as high pressure hydraulic hoses with grounded and braided reinforcement, a NEMA 4X rated stainless steel enclosure, and a 3/4″ brass ball valve for better leak prevention.

preventive vs. predictive

What we’re reading: preventive vs. predictive programs

In terms of substation asset reliability, one thing we can all agree on is that a break/fix mindset is not good enough. And by “not good enough,” we mean that it can negatively impact your safety, reliability, and profit. However, does your organization want to implement a preventive or a predictive maintenance program? And … what exactly is the difference? We recommend this quick, two-minute read from Reliability Connect for simple definitions and a pros and cons breakdown for each approach.
